The Clinical Trials Research Center, part of the Canadian Center for Vaccinology, is always looking for volunteers to participate in clinical trials. In a typical vaccine clinical trial, people of any age (depending on the vaccine) are vaccinated then monitored for months or years to see if the vaccine is effective and safe. The trials are thoroughly regulated by health authorities to ensure participant safety and confidentiality.
The vaccine used in a trial may be in one of the following stages of development:
Phase I - first stage of testing in humans (20-50 people)
Phase II - testing larger groups of people (20-300)
Phase III - randomized, controlled, multicenter trials (300-3,000)
Phase IV - also known as Post Marketing Surveillance, is ongoing surveillance of a vaccine or drug after it has been approved by Health Canada as safe and effective
