Looking to the Future
Along with the continuation of ongoing projects, CCfV has a number
of studies planned for the upcoming year including clinical trials,
surveys, and vaccine development.
CCfV will continue to act as the coordinating centre for CIRN, and
is preparing to submit a directed grant proposal in 2017 to CIHR for
an extension of the current grant. The funding will support five more study. Ebola continues to be an important public health issue, and
years of research with $10 million over that period. Additionally,
the CIRN Serious Outcomes Surveillance (SOS) Network, led by
Dr. Shelly McNeil, has extended its partnership with Pfizer securing
$4 million over two years for the continuation of work on their
Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) study.
CCfV continues to act as the coordinating centre for CIRN, a
national network of more than 35 institutions and 130 investigators
across Canada. To date, CIRN has facilitated more than $40 million
in research projects throughout Canada. Notably, CIRN’s Clinical
Trials Network (led by Dr. Joanne Langley) is currently managing a
Phase II clinical trial on HIV-infected adults and the Ebola vaccine
in Canada and Africa that will begin in March 2017. The study is
being sponsored by the International Development Research Centre
(IDRC), with Merck providing vaccine and regulatory support for the
four sites will be participating in the trial (two sites within Canada
and one each in Senegal and Burkina Faso, respectively).
CCfV will host its eighth annual symposium in 2017. Planning
for the meeting is currently underway. The CIRN Annual General
Meeting, which includes over 100 investigators (both national and
international), representatives from the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research (CIHR), the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and
partners in industry will be held in Halifax in May 2017.
