Behind the Scenes
Health research requires many people with a variety of skills and experience.
In addition to the Principal Investigator(s) who develop and lead the research,
an entire team is needed to execute the research. This team may include
nurses, statisticians, data analysts, laboratory technicians, research assistants,
trainees, administrative and fi nancial personnel. Quality assurance is essential,
requiring dedicated staff to continually inspect and improve processes.
Coordination and management of each study pulls together the various
components and team members to take the study to its conclusion and
publish a report.
Volunteers are also needed for clinical trials to test the safety and eff ectiveness of
vaccines and other medical products. Th ese volunteers donate more than their time.
Th eir contribution to health research can be as simple as completing a survey, or as
complex as participating in a clinical trial where they agree to visit the IWK Health
Centre perhaps 10 times, receive a vaccine, provide blood samples, and receive follow-
up phone calls to monitor their health. We sincerely thank the thousands of volunteers
who have given of their time and more, to improve health for entire populations.
